Re: [werewolf] Password abuse in game 229

I'm not in 229, so I'm just reacting to what has been said in this thread.

To quote bugmenot's email "I didn't think it was the real password, so just to see what happened I tried voting for the bandwagon with that username and password, to end the day."

This to me is extremely uncool. A lot of werewolf is based on the honor system. To even attempt to forge a vote, regardless of whether you thought it would be successful, is about as serious an offense as there can be in werewolf. And if he didn't think it would be successful, why do it at the end of the day when there would be no way for the real player to reverse the vote.

Now I think that his confession and apology should count for something. But ordinarily I'd consider this infraction worthy of a "server ban".

Seriously, though, I would say that this behavior
was
skating really close to grounds for expulsion from
the
server.

I really detest the way you used my password, not
only because of the
influence on the game but for not just telling me
what I did in error
instead of just using it in some weird way to tell
me what I had done.
And I'm really just flabbergasted that you not
only
did that, but also
threw my password onto the server for everyone (in
this game) to
see...

Not much more I can say about it...

Uncool.

Sometimes, people respond to an announcement
here
about a game being
formed. The problem is that when you reply to a
message on the
werewolf-users list, and are not paying
attention,
the return address
is the original sender. It's caught many of us
before (myself at least
3 times)....to the point where a few messages
ended with "...and dont'
forget to send me your password." Nobody ever
actually used the
password -- often when people sent me theirs, I
responded with, "you
missed, and you probably want to change your
password." (and the reply
to that was usually "Dammit!")

So.....if we wanna talk about Ethics in
Werewolf,
I suppose we're going
to have to cover password abuse now?

I don't think there's really a good fix for this
problem, save for
sender vigilance. And playing nice.

Hi guys,

as for my vote I'm going with the bandwagon. And
as for the
somebody-got-rocornel's-password thing, I have a
little
revelation to tell you. :-)

Rocornel once sent ME the message when he was
trying to sign up
for werewolf game 227. I don't know why he did
this, but I
received the following message a while back:

From: "The One Ring"

<theres.only.one.ring.to.rule.them.all@gmail.com>

To: "bugmenot@gawab.com" <bugmenot@gawab.com>

Date: 30 Mar 2006, 01:03:29 AM
Subject: werewolf join 227 rocornel [password]
sokoban

I didn't think it was the real password, so just
to see what
happened I tried voting for the bandwagon with
that username and
password, to end the day. And we got lucky on
it:
we got a wolf
with that vote!

Of course, maybe there's a reason why rocornel
doesn't like this
especially: maybe he's a wolf?

I'm sorry for any havoc this has caused and one
of
the main
reasons why I did this was to let you know that
your password
accidentally got out and you might want to
change
it. Please do
not hold any malice against me for it because I
am
a villager
and if you lynch me you'll be doing yourselves a
disservice.
