Help For Capablanca

Welcome to the network Capablanca server. The rules of Capablanca are below. The move notation is described on the help page for chess. Other commands are the same for all pbmserv games.

Rules of Capablanca

The Capablanca Home Page contains a full description of the Capablanca variant, but here are the highlights...

Capablanca's chess was invented by Jose Raul Capablanca (a chess master in the first half of the twentieth century). It is played on a board with two extra files. The initial position is shown below.

              a   b   c   d   e   f   g   h   i   j
            +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+    Black

          7 |*P*|*P*|*P*|*P*|*P*|*P*|*P*|*P*|*P*|*P*|  7

          4 |   |:::|   |:::|   |:::|   |:::|   |:::|  4
          3 |:::|   |:::|   |:::|   |:::|   |:::|   |  3
          2 | P |:P:| P |:P:| P |:P:| P |:P:| P |:P:|  2
          1 |:R:| N |:A:| B |:Q:| K |:B:| C |:N:| R |  1
            +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+    White
              a   b   c   d   e   f   g   h   i   j

The two extra pieces are a chancellor and an archbishop, which move as follows:
C (chancellor) The combined moves of a rook and a knight.
A (archbishop) The combined moves of a bishop and a knight.

All other rules are the same as standard chess, except that in castling, the king moves three spaces toward a rook (instead of two). None of the intervening spaces for the king may be occupied or threatened.
