Help For Ninuki-Renju

Introduction

Welcome to the network Ninuki server. The rules of Ninuki-Renju are below. Ninuki-Renju is an old Japanese game which was the basis for Pente. Ninuki has some additional movement restrictions to balance the game.

The challenge command is described here. Other commands are the same as for all pbmserv games.

ninuki challenge [-size=number] userid1 userid2

Starts a new game between userid1 and userid2 The -size parameter sets the number of spaces along each board edge. The default size is 19. The allowable sizes are odd numbers from 13 to 21.

Object of the Game

On a square board, the two players try to be the first to create a "perfect" line of 5 stones in a row of their color *or* try to capture 5 pairs of their opponents stones. You capture a pair of stones any time you sandwich the stones between a pair of your stones.

Movement Rules

On your turn, you place a piece of your color on the board.

Opening Rules:

The first move of the game (by Eks) is automatically made to the center (K10 on a 19x19 board).

The second move, made by Ohs, must be adjacent to the center move, that is restricted to [J-L][9-11].

The third move (Eks) must *not* be within 2 spaces of the piece at K10, that is OUTSIDE of [H-M][8-12].

An 'x' piece placed at A results in the capture of 2 pairs of Ohs men.

An 'o' piece placed at B does *not* result in the capture of a pair of Ohs men. Eks must do the "sandwich"ing to capture the Ohs men.

Additional movement rules:

If a five is made and after that the opponent captures and destroys the five there is no win. This is called an "unperfect 5". The destroying of the unperfect five must be made with the move immediately following the five.

Neither player is allowed to form a double-three, unless the move also makes a five, or it is necessary to do so when destroying an "unperfect 5" or blocking an opponent's four.

An "overline" (six or more stones in a row) does not win and remains neutral. A rare case occurs when a fifth capture gives the opponent a five. This occurs when one stone is captured away from a 6-in-a-row, leaving 5. In this case, the game is draw.
