The only way I know to increase damage is through the "extra damage"
trick which, IIRC, adds dice to ANY damage roll (thereby covering both
your ranged and melee examples above in one trick). The speedster actually
comes with this trick. I figured this was either to represent him being
able to hit a vulnerable point really quick. Or just being able to pull
off 5 or 6 punches at once.

For speedsters at least, there is another trick. Charge with a club from
20 or 30 inches away. This will do +4 to +6 damage, it'll break the club
in two, but it does a goodly amount of damage.
