[DL] Idaho the deadland - penetrated at last!

Gidday all.

Had a good session last night. The players penetrated Idaho and are heading
towards the tick mine they corrupted a game year ago (without realising yet
what they're heading for and that it's their fault!)

Had fun describing the setting.. from initial when they realised the sky was
a little darker than it should have been, through the sky darkening to a
deep maroon color (and the sun merely a slightly brighter disk of dried
blood color.. by then everything they could see was bathed in a lurid dark
red light. They had bad dreams and feelings the entire time; trees started
to be dead as they passed (just a few at first) and later more and more, and
now not just dead but twisted and deformed, most of the trees now; grass was
dead, animals they found horribly mutated and warped, they found lost
caravans of miners (heading to the mine to see what was wrong) slain with
hideous wounds all over their bodies and then rising to battle them, warped
wolves and coyotes baying for their blood, cleared a town of black cloaked
vampires who can transform themselves into shadow (well, they THOUGHT they
cleared it), and the air became thicker and thicker and they could start to
see tortured faces and forms writhing through the red mist surrounding them.
All sounds became harsh and shrill yet at the same time muted and hard to
hear, hexes became obscenely easy to cast but were always twisted in some
fashion, God was nowhere to be seen. The air was fetid with the constant and
worsening stench of rotting meat. They came to a major river and it ran red
with blood, filled with bloated and maggot ridden corpses of animals and
humans, floating slowly below the ricketly rope bridge spanning the river.
Their horses, who they had been managing to drag along with combinations of
very good animal handling rolls, and force, would not cross and they had to
leave them behind. As they crossed the bridge, the putrid corpses rose up
and attacked them, while from the other end of the bridge behind them, their
horses screamed for the last time as mutated ants the size of dogs bore them
down and tore them to shreds. Once across the bridge, they were actually in
the 'deadland' and I really had fun :-)

Some other things they found: the crucified remains of the previous
Pinkerton operatives sent in to 'sort it out', who were clearly dead and yet
their bodies writhed and squirmed on their crosses as their souls were
tormented elsewhere; A broken village of the damned, where the children had
turned cannibalistic and risen against their parents; the second Sweetrock
caravan, with the miners turned into horribly twisted wendiego who could not
be killed, but merely hacked into pieces small enough to not be a threat
anymore (that was a long and hard fight); a village where the occupants had
all been sacrificed on a huge pire, and their burning corpses rose and threw
themselves at the posse members, immolating once they had their arms around
a victim (ouch, that smarts); and more.

Basically, I went to town. It was a *hoot*. By the time they found the town
of Greenwood (still a half days RIDE from the mine) where I stopped for the
night they (the PLAYERS) were all terrified at the slightest sound and at
the same time 'horribly fascinated' by it all. Qudos to my players - they
were really into the spirit and it was just a fantastic game session.

Catch ya.
