Hi, Matt!
Since PEG has precluded my usual (semi-)official answers, please consider
all that follows the testimony of an "expert witness".;)
The degree of integration varies from unit to unit on both sides, and is
almost wholly dependent on the personality of the commanding officer. For
example, Gen. Patrick Cleburne's army would be fully integrated (or close
to it), and the armies of Gens. William T. Sherman and Nathan B. Forrest
would be near-completely segregated.
As the inestimable Mr. Goff wrote, ultimately it's each individual
Marshal's judgment, but one that I hope reflects the true characters of the
commanders portrayed, however fictionally. As Americans, we owe them
nothing less.
Please feel free to drop me another line if I may be of further help.

Christopher McGlothlin, M.Ed.
