Oh sure, but nonetheless, it's still a version of German. As a non-native German
speaker, I understand Austrian German as much as any of the other dialects (with
the exception of the Berlin one).

That's a bit the equivalent of saying that Quebecers don't speak French, because
most Frenchmen can't understand them when they talk.
