RE: [DL] Field of Honor Questions (ALLAN)
Well, I'm not Allan but I can answer a couple of these.
-----Original Message-----
First off, is there a FAQ and/or errata anywhere?
--------------------------
There was a little bit of errata on the web site. I'm sure we'll see it
again soon. If I recall, the only info provided were the stats for Indian
units.
At the risk of volunteering for something, I'll begin to keep an
FAQ/Accumulated rulings list for Fields of Honor. No promises on when this
will go up on my web page, but I'll make an announcement.
--------------------------
p.9: Retreating from melee:
- If a unit tries to retreat through another unit (i.e., interpenetration)
, do both units need to make a morale check?
- If so, I assume, if either unit fails, the retreating unit is destroyed,
correct?
--------------------------
Per the rules on page 7, "Formed units may pass though other formed units as
long as they both make a standard Morale test. Since the unit is retreating
(not broken and running), it should be considered formed. That means both
would make Morale tests to check to see if they can interpenetrate. As a
result, I would guess "correct" for your second answer. That being said,
this is just my interpretation and rulings from those higher up could change
this.
-------------------------
p.12: Base sizes:
- The conversion rates are incorrect and cause confusion (bases for 25mm
figures listed as 2" square-40mm X 40mm). What is the correct size (I'm
assuming 40x40, which is a fairly "standard" size)?
--------------------------
I'd go with standard sizes. So long as all the figures involved are
consistent, you shouldn't have any real problems, though.
--------------------------
p.15: Movement rates:
- The conversion rates from hexes to inches is inconsistent across troop
types.
For example, Infantry line movement rates are 2x Hexes for 15mm, 3x hexes
for 25mm. All other troop movement, is 1.5x and 2x. Similarly all weapons
are 2x & 3x, except howitzers. Is this intentional, or is this an error?
--------------------------
I can hazard a guess here (Line units were drilled to move in formation and
the "bonus" represents their training.) but had best leave that to others.
--------------------------
p.26: Battles:
- The rules mention playing battles in a certain order to familiarize
yourself with the rules as battles get more complex. Unfortunately, they
list Lexington & Concord, Cowpens, and Yorktown, with no corresponding
scenarios.
--------------------------
Yep, they aren't there. I recall that Shane lost an early version of the
mss. due to a hard drive crash. That may be the culprit -- as may be the
need to meet deadlines or reduce the length of the book.
If we're lucky, we'll see these at some point.
--------------------------
Scenarios/Troops types:
- Several scenarios and the army lists (p. 42) refer to "Continental Foot"
and "Foot" interchangeably. Furthermore, there are no "Continental Foot"
counters. I realize that this should be regular US foot, but the
inconsistencies are somewhat confusing
--------------------------
I'll make sure to add this to the Errata list.
--------------------------
- French Foot: Army lists show Morale C, counters have Morale B. Which is
correct?
--------------------------
I would guess that the French Foot would have morale grade C, to make them
consistent with the Continental, British, and Hessian Foot regiments.
--------------------------
- Tory Dragoons: Counters mislabeled "Tory Legion"
--------------------------
I suspect that the mislabeling might be the other way around. The Legion
was a mixed Cavalry/Infantry unit (the flip of the Legion card shows
dismounted skirmishers).
--------------------------
- Tory Militia: Have counters, but they are not included in the army list
table.
--------------------------
They should be identical to Continental Militia.
--------------------------
Components:
- Which map should be used for the Freeman's Farm scenario?
--------------------------
Freeman's Farm is part of the "Battle" of Saratoga (Several engagements over
a few days).
Here's a couple of questions I had asked Shane earlier and the responses I
received:
Q: I have already come up with a question regarding the rules. If you roll
a 5
on the Fortune table (Left, Left, Left: Enabling you to move one unit at
twice their normal rate), can you move an artillery piece forward one and
then use the other one movement to fire? (I am guessing no but can see
arguments for both answers.).
A: Yes, you can.
Q: The rules do not specify the type of cover provided by breastworks. I
assume fortifications like Ticonderoga would be hard cover and a simple
rail
fence is soft. What about the breastworks at Bunker Hill and those built
before a game on a successful Morale test?
A: All breastworks are hard, rail fences are soft.
Hope this helps!
