To be a walking dead, or a harrowed, the brain needs to be available and
whole. Sufficient head wounds are assumed to demolish the brain, leaving
insufficient material for a manitou to take up residence. This is in the
books.

In real life, Lincoln was shot in the head, but the wound "level" wasn't
terribly high. He died of blood loss and other complications, not head
wounds. In canon Deadlands, Lincoln could and did become harrowed. In
Allan's world, either the original gunshot wound was much worse, or no
manitou was ever sent to inhabit the body, so Lincoln stayed dead.

Back on thread, I keep to canon Deadlands pretty much. I do however run my
own creations, or introduce PEG material at odd times or intermingled with
my own stuff, or alter certain aspects of items/people within PEG material
to keep things interesting. "NPC X has a automaton bodyguard that does Y in
the book, but my players (one or two of which are marshal's also) meet X
with a middle-aged female bodyguard" -- kinda stuff. There's no telling
what is or isn't the same anymore. Keeps players on their toes!
