Maybe we just play differently, but when the situation is dire, my
players go back and forth about spending chips on rolls.  If they miss, a
chip might allow them to hit, but they never know if that hit's going to
matter.  On the other hand, they could save the chip and use it on
wounds, where they know exactly how well that chip is gonna save them. 
If they knew what a chip could get them on that hit roll, there wouldn't
be any more Fate about the Fate Chips.
