[DL] Rough and Ready

Something of interest that recently came up after a
site assessment.

The town of Rough and Ready (great name that) was
founded in 1849 by the Rough and Ready Mining Company.
R & R was/is located approximately five miles
north-northwest of Grass Valley, Nevada County, in
northern California. Auriferous ore and gold was mined
from this area with the Last Chance mine nearby as an
area of historic note.

What was interesting about this town was that it
seceded from the Union and declared itself a free and
independent state in 1850. A bit early eh?

There were reportedly three hundred residents in R & R
around 1867 so I don’t really see the Union getting
too hot and bothered about these rebels in their
midst.

Still, if anyone has a Posse running around northern
California perhaps they could visit this hotbed of
anti-Union fervor.

Cheers,
Mr. B
