Wow.

Y'know, I'm surprised this hasn't come up in my games
yet. Here's my thoughts:

1) The Marshal is a decent fellow. Not wanting any
harm to come to the Widow, he locks the players up for
her (and their own) protection and goes out to
investigate. He gets killed horribly, the deputy gets
suspicious and lets the posse out.

2) The Marshal is a tough, no-nonsense guy. He locks
the characters up (violently if need be) and sends to
Salt Lake or Chicago to pick the freaks up.

3) The Marshal is a black hat. He imprisons the
characters and turns them over to the nearest Mad
Scientist to psychoanalyze.

4) The Marshal is a hangin' type. He imprisons the
posse and hangs 'em.

Basically: unless the marshal is a Veteran of the
Weird West, I'd have to say he'll err on the side of
protecting the Widow Johnson over the posse. This is
where things like Friends in High Places or Law Man
come in reeeeeeaaaaal handy-like...
