My interpretation was always that *both* take the wounds. For Retribution, I'm
pretty sure (don't have F&B handy, but I have played a Blessed on occasion) that
is states that if you chip away your damage, only the highest number of wounds
you've sustained is inflicted on your enemy.

That way, your Mojave Rattler may bite the dust, but your Blessed won't exactly
be preaching his Sunday sermon any time soon either. Otherwise, it would really
be overpowered.

Think about it: the word "retribution" implies that the Blessed would have to
have suffered first, right?
