RE: [DL] Deadlands - Flagship vs. D20

I was gonna post about why I don't like d20, but I'll add that if you
like d20 then by all means play it. Just as long as you buy stuff from
PEG so that they keep writing more stuff for me to buy! ;-)

The gripes I have about d20 are it's core features for some others. I
don't think that a class based system is all that great. I don't like
flat probability "curves" resulting from using one die all the time (the
d20). I feel that point based character generation (even one like
Deadlands with the random card draw for character creation) is more,
umm, life-like. That sounds weird, but I like being able to decide what
my character learns with no restrictions because the character belongs
to a certain class/caste/profession. Multi-classing don't help much.
And I like the bell-curve of multiple dice for determining outcomes.
The single d20 with modifiers just rubs me the wrong way. And it's
"abstracted combat system" is too freakin' detailed; or it's detailed
combat system is too freakin' abstract. Armor absorbs impact, it
doesn't make you harder to hit -- that sort of stuff. Classic gripes
about DnD.

'Course, my group plays 3rd DnD every Sunday anyway! (For now... I'm
working on the next phases of my Deadlands campaign... <evil grin>)

As a Marshal, I'll do my best to answer any Deadlands question that
makes it to the list, be it from a Classic, d20, or Gurps point of view.
I won't be much help in a rules lawyer sense unless is a Classic
Deadlands rule, but setting or story stuff I can toss in my two white
chips about.

And there has been a comment made that this list is for Deadlands and us
ol' timers have to shove over and make room for the new D20 groupies.
That's just not correct. This list is a private organ that the
HighMuckityMucks of Pinnacle monitor and participate on. The owner of
the list is fully in his rights to declare a rule-set requirement (GURPS
ONLY ON THE LIST, for example), or what have you. I personally think
that making this list a Classic Rules Only list wouldn't be in anyone's
best interest, but it could happen. Well, it's not impossible for such
a thing to not happen. Eh, I was just trying to say that while we may
not like another's rules system, we can still be _civil_ about it.

Well, I for one am happy to see posts about Deadlands D20. Although I
don't personally own it, I hope it brings a lot more players to
Deadlands. For those D20 players out there, how do they work magic for
AB characters? Do hucksters still have to worry about backlash? If so,
how does it work without the cards?

Thanks,
Alex
