Its not a revision Christopher, its a clarification.

By 'The South' I meant the Confedaracy as a political entity, the motivations for individual soldiers to fight were infinite. After all Germany fought WW2 because it wished to expand its borders, but it would be silly to say that that was the motivation for the average German soldier to fight.

         This is a major revision of your stated thesis that "The South" 
(with no exceptions) was defending the "States' Rights" to hold slavery.

         Slavery was the cause of secession. Lincoln was the cause of The 
War. The South was quite content to leave the Union peacefully.
