Thats splitting hairs, as you well know. Lincoln didn't attack the Confederacy because he was bored, he did it because it seceded.

no slavery = no argument = no secession = no attack from Lincoln = no war

Note I'm not painting the CSA as the 'evil empire' here, I'm blaming the institution of slavery for the war, not individuals, and that is unfortunately the shared responsibility of north and South. it was easy for the North to tend towards abolition, as it would have cost them nothing while freeing a large labour force willing to work in Northern factories for a pittance as free men. Lincoln did some pretty outrageous things, but then Roosevelt interned Japanese Americans in 1941/42, one of the most outrageous injustices in American history, and he's looked on almost as a saint!
