[DL] Lookin fer Houston Gamers

Is anyone out there in Houston. I'm looking to fill a game a Deadlands
players are a bitch to find down near the NASA area. There is a big RPGA
contingent and everyone wants to play Greyhawk or Ravenloft.

"Did my local book store a favor and relieved them of 5 DL products the
other day. I now own more Deadlands than I'll probably ever get to
use. "

Yeah, I did the same thing , sort of. I had a few books that I got off
E-Bay, then saw the Big Bif Sale and bought a ton of stuff. I know am
short 1 book 3 box sets and 3 OOP dime novels for the Weird West.

Some questions.

"1) It seems like there's primarily one way to win a gunfight, at least
of
the good old fashioned duel at high noon variety. Standard combat you
can
win by being tougher or faster or more accurate or....But I'm getting
the
feeling that every PC (and most NPC's) who wants to be a serious
gunfighter
will have at least 90% identical stats, especially among Edges and
Traits. Do you find this?"

I am sunning two different groups, and found with one group, the edges
and hindrances they chose are very different, and character driven, and
in the second group, it's more of a numbers game. The second group is
better role players though, instead of roll players. Everyone wants to
mean and bloodthirsty, eventually they will die because of it.

"On a related note, duels seem somewhat...non-lethal. Painful, yes, but
do
you get a lot of draw-shoot-die fights, or do they wind up going into
combat rounds?"

I have only had two duals come up in game, one was a several combat
round shootout with a PC versus a Harrowed gunfighter. It was a glorous
death for the PC that we still talk about. The second was an argument
between two PC that lead to one drawing on the other and getting his
shoulder blown out with one shot. That PC was in a sling for 4 game
sessions and could use his rifle (his pride and joy), and was at
negative for driving his wagon and horse team.

"2) Do Hucksters get the raw deal it looks like they do? I mean, first
you
have to roll well, then you have to draw a good poker hand, then you
have
to roll all the other variables. It seems like a bit of double jeapordy
to
me. Is this just a case of "the spells are really just that powerful
when
they do get off, so we balanced it by making them hard to use", or is it

easier to get a hex off than I'm thinking?

For that matter, what about Shamans? Seems like even the simplest Favor
requires hours of work or major damage to self."

More often that not the hucksters in my groups are able to gettheir
spells off with some sort of effect. The worst was this past weekend
when the groups huckster pushed the Skinners story ahead by using Pryin`
Eyes and finding the real culprit before they killed more than a couple
of people. It work out for me in that the posse is now in St Louis and
I can run Bloody Ol` Muddy. In my other group, the Shaman was
ineffectual man through most of the story, but when the Spectre show up
and scarred off most of the Posse, he was able to call on his Guardian
Spirit and defeat it. He san g one heck of a Spirit Song for that.
