In my group, I've had one vet. He bought up 5 ranks of occult knowledge. He still doesn't really know what's going on. His background, he had one adventure. Where he had a doppleganger who slaughtered his family, and he came close to being hung for it. He's not sure how he survived. But he found a wise indian to teach him the ways of the shootist. Of course, it helps that he's the kind of player that, if I want to give him a clue, I must first beat him about the head and neck with it.
Oddly enough, the newbies in the group were catching on to what I wanted them to figure out... with half the hints. Veteran roleplayers... jaded mofos.
