It has never been definitely said but it is mentioned that HoE is just one
possible future that could happen which leads me to believe that there is
some alternate realities going on.  I always liked the Back to the Future
way of doing it.  You go back in time and change it all you want and that's
the way it's gonna be.  Although I never thought I would be comparing Stone
to Michael J. Fox.
