It's a sword. Plain and simple. If you happen to like the 1000+ fold
ancient ways forging and super sharp edge that cleaves anything then go
with it. If you have walked into any knife store recently and have
noticed that most katanas are machine made with no edge the there you
go.
 The notion that a katana is a super weapon is rather silly but some
people want to penalize their players for even thinking of having one.
It's just a game, as has been stated already, and we play the game for
fun. 
 If you don't like katanas just don't use them or if you think that
mabye there are some cheap replicas lying about the Wasted west then
mabye it isn't as far fetched to have pc's running around with a cheap
sword.
Anyway in the words of the immortal Brad Goodman: "Do what you feel."
