I'm more of a Rx-78 type of guy myself (and the novels). The way (I
figure)to do it properly would be to build all the sub systems, (the beam
rifle, beam sabre, core fighter/ejection system, etc.) than tie them all
together afterwards. Take a look at GURPS Mecha,Space and High Tech for
help.
