Well what's the max. range on a shotgun right now? It does 0d6 at the
50+yds mark. That's 150 feet. Some would argue that 2d6 or less qualifies
as "ineffective" :) so that would be 90 feet. Which is pretty close to his
estimate. 
I would argue the 80ft. mark anyway. I've been skeet-shooting (and we
weren't using slugs or anything) and I was hitting skeet at greater than
30yds. (my reactions aren't that good). I would say they were at least at
50 yds. (1/2 a football field) sometimes.

Question:
I just recently read about how shotguns are tappered (choked) to decrease
the spread of the buckshot. Would this mean you can't fire slugs from
them, since they would get jammed in/blow the barrel?
