I agree that announcing-number-left seems unlikely to be fun on
pbmserv and should just be omitted.

Another rule variation (and I'm not clear on which is in the official
Uno! rules):

A. If you have a card you can play, you must.

B. You can always choose to act as though you can't play even if you
can, and either pass or continue drawing cards.  (Maybe you want to
save your Wild card for later.)

If this option is in effect along with draw-until-you-can-play, we
won't want the number of cards automatically drawn by the server at
the start of each player's turn to be public information.  Either
always force players to manually draw each card after the first, or
don't publicly report "draw" moves and just publicly report the number
of total cards drawn at the end of each turn.
