Re: [PyrNet-L] Pyr puppy prices

In a message dated 98-03-24 23:06:51 EST, you write:

<< IF and I mean ONLY IF, conformation showing was judged more fairly on a
CONSISTENT basis then yes, I could agree that in most cases the dogs that are
being bred should wear that CH title. But until the system is reevaluated
and
the "BEST DOG WINS" consistently (instead of the best handler, or most well
known, etc.), I do not see how you can justify that. >>

You are making some sweeping conclusions on heresy i.e. others opinions. My
opinions are different and I am not professional. All that you describe does
take place. No system that involves a subjective evaluation from a written
standard could please everyone. The basis is is OK. In its main the system
works, but as anything else there are exceptions.

<,Everyone knows that Dog
showing as it stands today if a political entity, in many ways as bad if not
worse than what we see in Washington, DC!>>

Again sweeping conclusions. A good representative dog will get its
championship, but more importantly it will receive the approval of those
judges and exhibitors who know the breed. That is what we want, informed
opinion, even if it is not from the judge of the day.

<<I would like to see the shows and judging removed from AKC and handed back
to
the breed clubs. >>

Now you are really asking for politics and personalities. The balance between
the breed specialists and the "all rounders" is needed.

<< Many fine examples
of the breed(s) are only shown in obedience or agility. Does this mean they
should not be bred? >>

Who ever said that?

<< I can say with a fair amount
of certainty that I would purchase my "working" dog from a breeder that was
breeding "working" parents before I would purchase from a breeder that only
bred for shows.>>

That's the danger, type could be lost to function. Remember there are many
good working dogs. Our show Great Pyrenees can and do work. The non-typey
guard dog is probably not a Great Pyrenees or at least one that is
representative of the standard for the breed. Are you interested in LGD dogs
or are you interested in a Great Pyrenees? It the answer is both then you
must choose the Great Pyrenees because that is the only scenario where you
will get both.
