There's a book that was published this year that goes through dominance 
exercises, tips, body language and training independent breeds:  "So Your 
Dog's Not Lassie" by Fisher & Delzio.   

Basically, Samson is pretty smart.  He's learned if he throws a tantrum he gets 
attention.
