Re: [PyrNet-L] Fw: boarding

Weldome to the list Donelda,
Sounds like you are doing all the right things before breeding your
girl. This is a good place to ask questions since the list has Pyr
owners from all over the world.

There is practically no incidence of elbow displasia in Great Pyrenees.
I have never heard of a case, and I have had Pyrs for 30 years. For
that reason most people do not check elbows. Probably the test that
would be most useful after x-ray for HD would be to x-ray for luxating
patella.

You asked about whether the stud owner will charge for boarding when you
take your dog for breeding. This is one of those things you need to
determine before your dog comes in season. There is a lot of variation
in prices for stud fees. Some stud owners charge the price of a show
quality pup (can be anywhere from $800 to $1500+). Others want one or
two pups or the price of two pups. If you are giving up a puppy, you
need to decide in advance if this is the first pick pup or the second
and what sex. (if you want a male you don't want to give up the first
pick male). We have never charged or been charged to board, but that
does not mean that someone else won't. Some breeders want the stud fee
in advance, some want 1/2 in advance and some want the fee after pups
are born. It is best to get everything in writing before the breeding
takes place. If possible, we would prefer not to leave our dogs. We have
even stayed in a hotel with our dog and gone to the stud owner's for
breeding every other day until we got 2-3 breedings.

Hope this helps, let us know how things are going.
