In the wild if a dog is on his back, he is a dead dog.  It is natural
for a dog not to want to be put in a position where they could be hurt. 
So they do not want to be on their backs.  However, when they know that
they are not going to be hurt, they will roll over with no problem. 
Usually it is fear of being in a position where they can be overthrown
that they react to not pain or discomfort.
