Kathy,

I have just found the best tool for mats!  It is a little plastic doodad with
a small razor embeded in it so you can't cut yourself.  They are available at
stationary stores cause they sell them as letter openers!  About $ 0.49.  

They are flat plastic sort of the shape of a little "e" and the razor part is
in where the bottom of the "e" is.  You use the point to fit into tight mats,
and just gently pull to slice the mat.  Works GREAT!
