How about "baby gates"  Yes, they will eventually be able to go over them or
pull them down, but mostly they respect the boundaries you set.  Especially
if you set them up when the pup is small, they always see the gates as
larger.

Montana is fenced out of the laundry room and the front bedroom (nothing
there for him, and too many chewables).  Unless he just has to get in there
(like when we were mowing (and in mortal danger) and that was the only place
he could see us) he leaves them alone even though he really has no problem
pulling or pushing them down.
