Hi Maryellen,

Three is not too old to learn to swim.  You just need to let her go at her
own pace, build up her confidence, let her wade around for a while first,
encourage her to follw you in, support her undernealth a little at first too
perhaps,and when she finally gets going, take it really easy and don't let
her get too tired or 'out of her depth'.  She will need to build up the
stamina, style and confidence to swim with ease first.  Once they get the
hang of it though, there is no stopping them! :-D
