Since you work in a hospital, what about medical supplies....rubber gloves, 
syringes, needles, plastic tubing, gauze, iodine, bleach, etc.  Here at the 
local hospital, once a box is opened, if everything isn't used, it's just 
thrown away.  Certainly there would be things like that that would still be 
good, and could be used for the shelter.
