My experience has been that they patrol their perimeter.  I hope that this
means he may be passing back by soon as he makes his rounds. Keep your eyes open
at the house.  If he finds a nice size treat, he may come back to the yard to
eat it.

I don't know how big your towns are.  When my dog gets away for a while here in
Montana I call the police/sheriff dispatch.  Just to let them know that the dog
is friendly and that I am looking for him.   Most people when they see a dog
that big call it in if they are intimidated at all by the size.
