[PyrNet-L] Breeding/Rescue Debate

Yes Darrell these Rescues do take up the valuable resources of a Club and we
have discussed this several times. The majority of Breeders here do their
own work in ensuring suitable new homes, s/n's, but there is always the
minority who don't give a hoot and are confident that the Breed Club will
pick up after them so they just carry on regardless. I have yet to learn
how to make a distinction as have others in the Breed as to what constitutes
a Rescue/Rehome , we turn our backs on nothing therefore we are spending our
Breed Club's hard earned money but then we who do the rescue/rehome are the
ones out there fund raising in the North and South Island to keep this
Rescue Fund topped up. I have also been told that by doing what we do
"These so called Breeders have won" because we have done this work and we'll
keep doing it. Our problems are minimal compared to other countries, our
Breeders are far less, so if a Breeder does turn their back on a cry for
help then here they are easily identifiable. Yes we have placed
Rescues/Rehomes in homes where we have had orders for puppies but healthwise
we are confident that we are not passing on any problems.

Were it not for the Breeders here being involved in taking back their own
Pyrs (and helping with other Pyrs) then we would be much less fortunate
financially. We just could not turn our backs on Rescuing Pyrs so those
breeders not interesting in taking their Pyrs back or helping have probably
won and I cannot see any other way apart from carrying on.

I have yet to see here a really "bad" unhealthy example of a Rescue Pyr.
What we have seen are very neglected, thin, dirty Pyrs but with the love
and attention given by the helpers these Pyrs usually blossom once given the
requirements they need.

Education on the Breed is something we all try and do even if it's just
chatting to someone about Pyrs on walks, at shows, doing Pet Expos, sending
out info, keeping contact, giving support to owners of puppies and rehomes
but somewhere along the line someone just doesn't listen. Sure we could
spend more of our hard earned funds on this but show us a Pyr in a bad way
who needs a chance and out comes the cheque book!
