Re: [pyrnet] Breeding?

Stand back, Jodi, you are about to be inundated by hate mail--or at least
"how could you???" mail. There are many who believe very strongly about
unplanned, unknowledgeable, etc. breeders.
If you really don't know about breeding, genetics, etc., don't breed.
Unless the resulting puppies will benefit the the breed by improving mental
and physical characteristics, don't breed. There are already way too many
Pyrs out there that no longer benefit the breed. Way too many Pyrs in
rescue because owners don't understand the breed.

So to answer your question, when should a bitch be taken out of the breeding
pool? The answer is: Unless the bitch is sound, the breeder knowledgeable
and the pups will be going to responsible homes--she should never be bred.

Accidents happen. But if you insist on having intact males and females
(because you believe sterilization is mutalation) then it is your
responsibility to see that neither be allowed to breed again. If this seems
harsh, think of all the boo-boos being euthanized each day in your local
shelter. Do you want your pups to end up there? Odds are many will.
