Re: [pyrnet] Soiling crate
I have a six month old male Pyr who has soiled his crate since we got him at
6 months. He urinates in his crate whenever we leave the house, whether it
is for 1 hour or five hours. The crate is an appropriate size, We had a dog
trainer/behaviorist come in and verify that fact. Initially we had him in a
smaller crate in an effort to stop this problem, but he could not stretch our
completely. Now he is 65 + pounds and in an extra large crate.
We have tried putting him in our mudroom as an alternative because he "hung
out" in the room when we were home, but he has been soiling that too.
Yes, we do take him out to urinate before we leave the house.
The trainer/behaviorist feels he must be anxious when we leave, but we have
tried to put him at ease by leaving a special bone or treat to give him when
we leave the house, but that has not worked either. We have also tried
leaving for short periods such as one hour and that has not made a difference.
We have tried putting a towel down, not putting a towel down...any
suggestions that have been offered by non-pyr owners have been tried.
He seems content staying outside. We just ordered him a large dog house, but
we really want a house dog that stays fairly clean and dry. In addition,
Casper (our dog) loves to be in the same room with us when we are home. He
is happy outside, but we always bring him in at night and plan to continue to
do so. Yes, he does stay dry all night in his crate which is in the bedroom.
I am certain it is because he is not anxious and we are in the room with him.
We have had him tested for a urinary/bladder infection even though he "stays
dry" in his crate for 8-9 hours a night. All tests came back negative.
We are not happy about this. We have trained a german shephard, a standard
poodle and a mut over the past 15 years and this is a first for us.
Please let us know if this is indicative of the breed, a deep dark secret
nobody wanted to share. We would also appreciate any suggestions.
