Actually that is old thought , not new.  They are actually heading toward
earlier spay/ neuter.  Tests have been done as early as 8 weeks on spay. 
Surgery is very minimal at that time, recovery time quick and barely
noticeable.  This also gives breeders the opportunity to make sure that
dogs that go out as pet homes only, are just that.  Usually this can be
done where there is a Vet. clinic.  Spay neuter clinics run three to four
mo.  And Vets. in private practice can be really behind on this.  A lot
of old notions are such ,that they don't grow as well.? The opposite
seems to be true as it allows for longer slower growth, rather than the
rush of hormones, and then often early fix on sealing off bone growth,  
As in ,Gelding horses are usually much larger than Stallions, with larger
bone mass as well.  I definitely am in favor of getting the job done as
early as you can manage it.  Cindy
