One of the reasons it's a big issue in Texas is because it is 
zoonotic.  Rabies has been a problem in coyotes, bats, foxes and 
other species in Texas which makes it easily transferrable to dogs 
and to people and once you've come in contact with it and don't 
get the shots and get it you're dead.
