Re: [pyrnet] Pyr Hips:Rimadyl

Excellent artical on Rimadyl. I had to look, but my male was put on this
after a minor elbow operation 2 weeks ago. He had ran into a stick or bush,
and had either a thorn or small wood particle in the meat of his elbow. We
tried several approaches with antibiotics, and flushing, but finally had to
settle for the operation. He seems to be recovering o.k., and is walking
fine, but still has a lot of swelling, and some reoccurring fluid buildup in
the area. My vet put him on Rimadyl for the swelling, but it really hasn't
helped that much. I do wonder why we don't give dogs large dosages of
Ibuprofen like we do people. I've had as much as 3000 mg. per day prescribed
for myself with a similar problem. Does anyone know of a better
anti-inflammatory for dogs? I would appreciate any advise on this. Thanks:
Charlie

As already suggested, a check with your vet to confirm the problem is HD and
not some other injury is a good idea.

I too agree that treatments such as acupuncture can be very effective and
supplementing with things such as glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM can help
immensly in many cases. Bromelain is an excellent natural anti-inflammatory
(it is an enzyme derived from the pineapple plant).

I am not enamoured of products such as Rimadyl and would never personally
reach for them as a first option for anything. Rimadyl CAN have side
effects and it is good to be aware of them if you are going to use it. Here
is a good article titled "Rimadyl - Safe or Not" which has lots of info to
help you make your own decision:
