When guests come to my house for the first time, they are generally nervous
about the size of my pyrs. Once it's realized that they're just big
babies, the fear goes away. I've never had company that was genuinely
afraid of dogs but if I did, I would put the dogs downstairs. (If it
were an extended visit of, say, a few days, some other arrangements would have
to be made.) There's surely room for compromise with this issue. I
have dogs and kids that I love, however I don't always like my friends' dogs
and/or kids! When I visit someone, I don't necessarily want their dog
slobbering on me, sniffing my privates, or mounting my leg! My dogs always
just want lovins from company but if I see they're getting on my guest's nerves,
I'll put them downstairs. I wrote several months ago about visiting a
girlfriend I hadn't seen in a while. She has four dogs: two little
cockers, a dobie, and a german shepherd. From the time I walked in the
house until the time I left, I was jumped on, my fingers and elbows were nipped,
and the dobie snapped in my face. The dogs' nails shredded my stockings
and snagged my dress. I haven't been back since! Sure, it's her
house and her dogs live there, but what about being considerate to one's
guests?
