It's a good thought to check the OFA database.  If those dogs are OFAd.  If
they are GDCd or PennHIPd then that is of no help.  And not finding the dog
on the OFA database does *not* mean that the dog is not hip certified.  The
best, indeed I think the absolutely required thing to to ask the breeder
for copies of all health clearances on the dogs.  These are surely at least
as, and probably more, important than the pedigree that most people are
delighted to give you.  Actually a buyer should never have to ask for these
things.  The breeder should provide them without being asked.  They can and
should,  also provide you with the background info.  Many breeders have hip
cert numbers right on their pedigrees for as many generations as they
exist.
