Yes Jane, I really do agree with you.  I run the vacuum daily around the
house, but I know that steam cleaning the carpets 3-4 times a year has
made a big difference in
varmint/critter control.  Knock wood, I have never had a real interior
infestation.  We used to set off the bug bombs in the old days to make
sure we didn't have problems, but that was such a big hassle to make sure
everything was safe.  I have found better results with the steam
cleaning, plus having nice clean fresh smelling carpets as well!   I love
my Hoover steam cleaner, one of our better investments, especially with
living in the country and having animals!   :-)   Cindy
