i had a dog that used to destroy everything as well.  it was separation
anxiety and she's worked through it nicely.  she had a bad background, and
as emotional as these dogs are it's easy to get them stressed out.  you
could try a kennel - often they will take it on as their own little bedroom.
talk to your vet and he/she can help you figure out if that's what it is.
it takes some minor training and sometimes they can (if necessary) give you
a light drug to take off the edge, to assist w/the training, and then you
can take him off of it when he gets used to you leaving and understands that
you're not deserting him.  i even had one tear up my seatbelt in my car, but
he'd been through a horrible time, too - he, as well, is doing nicely now
w/some simple training.
