Hi Jessica -- welcome to the list.  Your male sounds perfectly "normal" to
me.  The rescue male that we just placed is just like you described.  Jarod
is very loving, loves people and other animals, and is a real "love bug". 
Jarod ws a year old in February, BTW.  We also have two males of our own --
Baron who was 4 in February, and Tanuki who just turned 4 on Sunday.  Both
are very easy going dogs, unless they see each other -- then WWIII breaks
out.   

As for your roses -- well, IMHO, I'd give them up.  None of the plants
around our house have done well with the dogs.  Yet again, I'm not the best
gardener, so my lack of attention toward the plants probably had something
to do with it.
