We too live in South Carolina, and one of our Pyrs (of course, it's our
LGD) gets terrible skin allergies.  Bathing in Chlorhexiderm (sp?) helped,
and benedryl as well, but it is never completely cleared up until our first
frost.  It's either the red clay dirt, that Tanuki digs down in to get
cool, or the fescue grass that's growing in our pasture.  It's not food
related, because he gets feed the same thing year round, and the outbreaks
only occur during the July/Aug/Sept months.  At least this summer, with
starting the benedryl early in the season and by giving regular brushings,
the only place that has gotten bad was the top of his head.
