Clearly there are very important links with some Islam and Dogs.  In Turkey 98 % are Islam.  Families have bred the Akbash Dog (a very likely close relative to the Pyr), The Kangal Dog, the Kars dog, and the Tazi dog (sighthound very similar to the Saluki, that might be part of the Akbash heritage), for many generations in Families.  The family pride in its breeding have kept these ancient dogs pure bred for centuries and that is all that has kept these dogs that way.  So they are very important to these Muslims and valued a great deal even today as the old ways fall by the wayside.  The Kurds also strongly of Islam have a strong association with the Guard dogs of the Flocks and may be a very early link with the Pyr going back as much as 11 thousand years.

Maybe it is more this radical oppressive Bastard government as opposed to the religions themselves?
