Julie, one theory going back many years is a sign of
purity in the Breed. I am aware that there are some dogs born with double
dewclaws who are not related to the Pyrenean, (the Briard and the Beauceron have
them) and also other Breeds who may have d/dclaws which are removed early.
Then again we do get Pyrenean puppies born with single dewclaws. Some
books say that the d/dclaws are useful in rough terrain but those d/dclaws would
need to be a part of the foot so to speak rather than halfway up the leg (or
nearly!) as I have also seen! An interesting question you pose and one I
wonder if there is an answer for?
