Re: [pyrnet] Tell me about my Pyr
Hi Dennis,
I can give you my very unscientific observations on
the subject of pyr coats/types having been owned by
only 2 pyrs, and what I have seen while spending some
time at last year's Great Pyr Specialty. I have never
heard of "three specific coat types", but rather more
of a range. Starting with totally white, then white
with markings, usually on the head and then the back
toward the base of the tail. The shades of the
markings go from a champagne tan, to grey, to even a
reddish type? (although I have never personally seen
this color, just read that it exists). The markings
can be pale, or sometimes darker. Most pyrs are
predominantly white, and I believe the standard
indicates that the markings shouldn't cover more then
30 percent of the coat. As far as show pyrs, it seemed
like there were about as many marked dogs in the show
as all white.
One thing I learned about coat at the show had to do
with the hair length. I had brought my pyr Mandy to
the show (she was not entered) and I noticed that her
coat was significantly longer then many of the other
pyrs. One of the breeders that I mentioned this to,
asked me if she was spayed (she is). He said that was
why (obviously most of the show dogs are not
spayed/neutered). I don't know if this is always the
case, or maybe it also has to do with her particular
genes, but it was interesting to hear that
explanation.
Regarding shedding, she does some shedding all year,
but definately a much heavier shedding in late spring.
I also think it takes a few years for them to grow in
their full coat.
