A dog of this age, given the predator(s) she is supposed to deter, should not be working alone. A dog cannot protect the herd and fight off the attacker at the same time. She needs a partner. The predator was dispatched, and the bulk of the herd was saved due to this dog's intelligence and correct reading of the situation. Chances are, those seen taking off into the night were other dogs, and she knew it. Give her some credit, she did her job and she did it well. You might want to join and post this question on LGD-L. Most people there use their LGD's in working situations. I think you will find their response similar to mine.

There really has not been enough information given to offer a real informed opinion, but the most important thing is the dog is still a puppy.  They do (and can) work at this age, but lets be fair.  It is asking an awful lot of this puppy to work like this, but chances are it will do admirably well.  And the puppy likely would have engaged the intruder and fought to its death doing so if that was what was required.  Its not the breed that need evaluating, it is the owners who think a puppy should just suddenly able do such a critical job without any help or guidance to follow.  Maybe the Pup had prior experience from you the breeder, but being in place just a few days is all new and in my experience Pyrs take few days to adopt their charges.  I am not sure I would not go and take the dog back if it were mine, but again we do not have enough information from what has been given.

Sounds like a very special puppy from a very special breed.  God love and protect it.
