Re: [pyrnet] seperation anxiety

Hi,

We just recently lost our 12 yr old Pyr.We only had her for 18 months.  She was an old stray when we rescued her and our first Pyr.  We had the same problems.  She loved oak!!  We started with crating when we left as we had a very old small fox terrier who would start a fight just because she wanted to and we didn't trust the two girls together unsupervised.  So we crated Sugar (Pyr) in a large kennel and our other two in their kennel.  Sugar was a mess when we got home...mostly drool but enough to have her soaked and totally a mental mess.  it was awful.  So we rigged a childs gate to keep her at least confined to dinning and office area.  We got home, childs gate was chewed right down the middle (she spit out the bolts).  My husband built a gate she could not chew thru but it took both of us to set it up before we left anywhere.. that's when she began on our new bar stool chairs and the kitchen counter and urinated..  I called in an animal behaviourist to talk to the three of us.  He gave some good pointers, but none applied to Sugar.  We would not give her up.  One day we left her loose and just kept our other two crated....That was the ticket.  She was happy.  She had a house to look after and "patrol".  She needed the freedom to roam and take care of things.  All the trials we had, and she is still definatley the best, and most caring dog we ever had we ever.   I wish I had known about this site when I had Sugar.  I hope this helps..Linda

Subject: [pyrnet] seperation anxiety

Well, everyone was so helpful on the eating/food problems, I'm hoping you have some suggestions for a pup with horrendous seperation anxiety!

I have a crate now & have had to crate her a few times, even trying to acclimate her when I'm home.  Once I'm gone & she's in the crate, she has torn her nose and mouth up and wet herself, to the point of another vet visit (ONLY $112.00 this week)...I got a Butler's DAP (pheromone) plug in and the only "benefit" seems to be a new trait, peeing in the house!  I REALLY don't want to have to "drug" her with Clomiecalm or whatever it is, but if this keeps up, will have no choice.  I've left an old tee shirt (I wore yesterday) in the crate this morning and am hoping that might help somewhat.  I know it's forfit now (will be in ribbons when I get home)

Anyone with any suggestions out there?
