RE: [pyrnet] RE: Pyrs with other dogs

My 20 month old pyr Czar loves all dogs of different sizes, shapes, breeds
and colors....he is in the process of training for his canine good citizen
award and also attends "doggie day care" twice a week with about 30 other
dogs who all play together. The people at doggie day care say he is the
best behaved dog and gets along with everyone! The only challenge I have
ever seen is the dog who lives closest to us in our rural area, who is a
male mixed breed which runs free. If he comes close to our fence and am I
near Czar and Raisa, Czar will become very protective and growl at the
neighbor dog. Czar is paired at home with our 3 year old Malamute, Raisa,
and they get along just beautiful! Raisa established early on that she is
the alpha, and Czar ceratinly understands that; even though when they are
outside, he becomes her "protector" and guards her; it is amazing.
I do believe it has a lot to do with how the dog is socialized and raised
when it is very young. Czar has been through (4) organized classes and is
now on his 5th for his CGC test on August 23; I know this has helped
tremendously.
Socialization and classes has been the key for Czar. Good luck with
Sam.....

Currently there are no other members of our family but Sam's best friend is
a female Doberman named Phoebe, who is at our house quite often. They are
the best of friends although she does tend to dominate the action. :) Sam
loves all dogs so much and we were wondering how common this type of
behavior is among Pyrs. We are happy that he is so friendly but we had read
that Pyrs weren't always receptive towards other dogs. We were wondering
what others have experienced?

Hello Everyone,

We would like to introduce ourselves as we have recently joined the list.
My name is Brian and two years ago my wife Nicole and I drove down from
Michigan to Dayton, Ohio to rescue a Pyr named Sampson. Although we knew a
lot about Pyrs, we didn't know what to expect when we got there. We had
originally wanted a Newfoundland or a Bernese Mountain Dog, but we caught
word from someone on the Newfie list that a Pyr in Dayton needed a home. We

immediately called and the next day drove down and got him. It was the best

thing we could have done. He is the greatest dog. We love him so much. We

don't have any funny stories to tell about him right now but we look forward

to hearing your stories and sharing ours.
